Avoiding Ticks While Outdoors

Terra Bites Lawn Service based in Braselton, Ga. knows how tough it can be to deal with pesky insects while outdoors. However, some outdoor pests can cause far worse damage to your immune system than others, like ticks!

Living in the beautifully green state of Georgia is a wonderful thing to most residents; but the more trees, shrubberies grasses and ornamental plants that you have around your home can also attract some unwelcome neighbors. The deer tick, brown dog tick and american dog tick, are among the unwelcome guests in our Southeastern region.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) estimates a that 300,000 lyme disease infections occur each year in the United States, of which only about 30,000 are reported to CDC by state health departments! Lyme disease is the most commonly occurring vector-borne disease in the US, and ticks are the main disease carrier.

  • Use repellents containing 20% or more DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide); follow directions on the bottle. Typically, it can be applied to the skin and clothing, leaving tick protection for up to several hours.
  • Cover up! Wear clothing with long sleeves, pants, boots, etc., to act as an initial buffer. Although ticks can crawl under clothing, you stand a better chance of preventing them with your clothing choices.
  • Check yourself and others (especially children) for ticks after being in high risk tick areas; sometimes this is around your home, making daily checks necessary.
